Can the development of digital schools be compatible with the imperative of ecological transition?

Organized by Educa@tech Expo

Although there's still a long way to go (in terms of quality, quantity, usage...), decades of public investment have gradually led to a significant increase in the levels of connection and digital equipment for teachers, schools and students. Touchscreen tablets, TBIs and TNIs, videoconferencing and telepresence equipment... in many schools, the question of renewal is now being asked.

At the same time, environmental concerns are gaining ground and, in the wake of the IPCC, the French National Council for Ecological Transition is warning of the risk of a 4°C climate trajectory if no effort is made. Against this backdrop, how can we forget that the ecological footprint of the digital age is becoming increasingly significant, and could triple again by 2050 if nothing is done to halt the increase in the production and use of terminals?

We therefore need to better measure the levers for reducing the environmental impact of digital technology in education, both in terms of tools and objects, and in terms of content: how can we rethink the way schools are equipped? How can we influence teaching practices and content to meet these new challenges?

Will artificial intelligence be the key to educational innovation?

Organized by EDUCPROS

Artificial intelligence (AI) is raising many questions in school and higher education. Its tools are being integrated into classrooms, and teachers are now having to deal with them, not only to thwart the use of AI, but also to use it to support pupils and students.

But can AI also become a tool to boost the creativity of pupils, students and teachers? Should teachers be trained in certain tools and use them in the class to become learning aids and open up students' critical thinking? What AI resources and media can be brought into the classroom and ultimately enable adaptive learning through this approach?
During this conference, we will analyze the challenges of AI in terms of pedagogical innovation and learning.

Schools and the challenge of inclusion

Organized by Educ@tech Expo

Equality of opportunity is at the heart of the republican school system: it postulates that every pupil should have the same opportunities to succeed in his or her academic and professional career. In so doing, it requires schools and all those involved in education to take into account all the factors that all too often make this equality a sham.
During this round table, we propose to organize our reflections around the challenges of digital technology for inclusive education in a context of dematerialization. Noting that there are major inequalities in access to knowledge, higher education, employment and citizenship (...), we will be looking at the methods, tools and educational practices that enable us to make a concrete commitment to inclusive education.

A smart investment in technology for schools: exploring the four principles that have guided the city of Marseille

Organized by Apple

The City of Marseille have a vision for digitisation in schools which empowers all educators and students to reach their full potential.

In this roundtable discussion, leaders from the city explore the four principles that drove their vision: equitable access to education, environmental commitment, online student safety, and the ethical use of technology. And why investing in Apple technology in education aligned their budgets with the right products and services to achieve their vision, while limiting the impact on the environment.

Built to last and designed with the environment in mind, iPad and Mac maintain their performance over time while improving operational efficiency — both in and out of the classroom.

A major decriptage session devoted to Generative AI

Organized by Educ@tech Expo et en partenariat avec l'INRIA

In partnership with INRIA

The term "Artificial Intelligence" covers a range of digital technologies enabling a machine to detect, categorize, recognize, describe, evaluate, understand, reason, predict, explore, decide, prescribe, etc., with performances that previously seemed unattainable. These technologies open up numerous opportunities in the field of education, but also raise many questions. In close collaboration with key players in the field, Inria(*) is working both on the development of AI for education (e.g. to personalize learning for a wide range of profiles) and on AI education for as many people as possible (e.g. through MOOCs for teachers or in-class interventions with students).

(*) Inria is the French national institute for research in digital science and technology. Within its project-teams, scientists explore new avenues, often interdisciplinary, to meet ambitious challenges. The institute supports a diversity of innovation paths (standardization, open source software publishing, partnerships with companies, creation of deeptech startups, etc.) and is committed to implementing high-stakes public policies.

ChatGPT, Dall-e, Midjourney... The rapid emergence of generative AI in 2022 and 2023 has caused euphoria and panic throughout society.  Of course, schools have not been spared: while EDTECH companies (from schools to higher education) are seeking to appropriate new knowledge in record time, while teachers and educational engineers are seeking to measure the consequences of these new uses on their professions, many are worried about the consequences of uncontrolled use, both for the acquisition of knowledge and for our sovereignty. Some even see in the arrival of these new tools a resurgence of the spectre of Artificial Intelligence replacing teachers, with all the associated risks of manipulation.

This round-table discussion will draw on a wide range of knowledge to dispel fantasies and establish knowledge as a basis for shared questioning. Modestly, it aims to provide answers to the following questions:

  • How does generative AI work?
  • What ethical issues does it raise?
  • From primary to higher education, how is it transforming and will it transform schools and teaching practices?
  • What kind of new alliance should be forged between research and schools?
  • What kind of public policy should be built around these issues?

Is digital a "guy thing"?

Organized by Educ@tech Expo

Let's lift the suspense right away: Computing wouldn't even exist without women. From the first computer program invented by Ada Lovelace in 1843 to the DNS service that still structures our use of the Internet today, women have always been at the heart of digital technology and its progress.

However, parity is still far from the norm. According to INSEE (2019 figures):

  • Men account for 77% of digital jobs, 91% of network and telecom infrastructure professions
  • At European level, only 18% of ICT specialists are women

In the context of society's digital transformation, this situation has a major impact on the algorithms used by the tools we use every day (sexist and gender bias). It deprives women of access to valued professions, and our companies of the talents that could express themselves in them.

Faced with this situation, the educational players (teachers, complementary associations, EDTECH players, higher education channels, etc.) have an important role to play in inspiring and giving women the place they deserve.

How can we encourage girls to enter the digital professions? How can we combat gender stereotypes in our educational programs? What role can EDTECH players play, and what alliances can we build with higher education?
